Nikos Rizos

Nikos Rizos, known by the stage name Νίκος Ρίζος, was a Greek actor recognized for his work in comedies. He was born on September 30, 1924, in Péta Ártas, and died on April 20, 1999, at the age of 74, in Athens. He is buried at Athens First Cemetery. Rizos began his career in 1948 with the play 'Anthropoi, anthropoi' at the Metropolitan Theatre. Initially working as a play text copyist, he made his official debut as an actor in this revue by Alekos Sakellariou. He appeared in many comedies in Greek cinema, and was sometimes referred to as ‘the short giant’ of Greek cinema due to his height being just over one and a half meters. From 1959, Rizos founded his own theatre company, initially with Yannis Gkionakis and Takis Miliadis, performing in revues like 'Omonia Plats-Ploutz' and 'Mandoubala'. He also collaborated with the Kalouta sisters and appeared in reviews such as 'Kainouria Athina' and 'Anthropoi tou '60'. He formed the theatre troupe 'Vasilis Avlonitis - Georgia Vasiliadou - Nikos Rizos' in 1961, which ran successfully until 1965. This troupe toured Greece and Germany, entertaining Greek immigrants. Rizos appeared in approximately 300 comedy films, including titles like 'To soferaki', 'O thisavros tou makariti', 'O Klearchos, i Marina kai o kontos', and 'Simoria eraston'. He also starred alongside Martha Karagianni in the television series 'O dromos' (The Road) and made his last television appearance in 1999 in 'I aithousa tou thronou'. He ran the Astor Theatre from 1986 to 1990, converting the cinema on Stadiou Street into a theater. Rizos was a theatrical entrepreneur for 27 years. He died from edema following a heart attack.
