He began his career as a Mainz carnival performer and initially worked in the Mainz city administration as an administrative specialist. From 1952, he established himself as part of the comedic duo 'Frau Babbisch and Frau Struwwelich' alongside Georg Berresheim, performing for three decades until 1982. Dürr played the role of the somewhat clumsy 'Frau Babbisch' within this partnership. Their performances sometimes extended beyond the carnival season. Dürr’s professional life included diverse roles. After his time in the Mainz city administration, he worked at the Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz. Later, he served as a personnel specialist at ZDF. In 1965, he transitioned to self-employment, opening an artist agency. He also contributed to musical traditions, composing the "Kressbronner Sängerspruch" for the Liederkranz Kressbronn in 1952, a choir with which he was associated. His appearances were noted in various contexts, including the 'Mainz, wie es singt und lacht' television program in 1964, where he performed alongside Georg Berresheim as Fraa Babbisch and Fraa Struwwelisch, following an appearance by Dr. Willi Scheu (Bajazz). The newspaper AZ anticipated a performance of 'Heile, heile Gänsje' during one of his appearances. Otto Dürr’s work was integral to the popular television program 'Mainz bleibt Mainz,' which began in 1955 as 'Mainz wie es singt und lacht.' This show significantly contributed to the wider recognition of Mainzer Fastnacht, broadcasting in Austria from 1957 and Switzerland via Eurovision from 1958. The program experienced a 'Fastnachtsrivalität' with ZDF starting in 1964. He appeared alongside other notable participants such as Joe Ludwig, Herbert Bonewitz, Willi Scheu, Georg Berresheim, and Jürgen Dietz. Rolf Braun served as Sitzungspräsident for 25 years, until 1989, and his phrase 'Wolle mer’n eroilosse?' became a recurring joke in the show. The program continues to be scheduled at least until 2024, with Andreas Schmitt currently holding the position of Sitzungspräsident since 2014.

He completed an apprenticeship as a tailor, briefly worked for Pohland, a men's clothing store, and experienced periods of unemployment. After completing 15 months of military service in Neustadt am Rübenberge, he began writing short stories and performing at poetry slams starting in the early 2000s, winning several regional poetry slam championships between 2009 and 2012. He is a frequent guest on television shows like Extra 3 , nuhr im Ersten and regularly appears in other programs. He is an ambassador for SOS Children's Villages and currently lives in Waltrop, in the Ruhr area, as a father. In April 2026, Sträter announced he had been diagnosed with a tumor, leading to cancelled tour dates. He underwent treatment for his illness and initially cited a need for a 'longer-term regeneration phase' as the reason for cancellations. While fans initially worried about a recurrence of depression, he described his experience with cancer as almost the most enjoyable time of his life. He has also been diagnosed with diabetes, which contributed to a significant weight loss. He resumed touring in May 2026 and appeared on the '1LIVE Comedy-Talk' with Felix Lobrecht, discussing his illness. He is releasing a new book titled "Mach mal das große Leselicht an," which is his longest work to date. Comedy and Stand-Up in Germany

Stand-up comedy has become an increasingly popular part of entertainment in Germany, with comedians performing in comedy clubs, theatres, festivals and other live venues.

German stand-up covers a wide range of subjects and styles. Performers may draw material from everyday life, relationships, work, cultural differences and personal experiences, while others focus on satire, social observations or deliberately absurd humour.

Berlin, Hamburg, Cologne and Munich are among the cities with active comedy communities, but German comedians perform throughout the country. The growth of comedy clubs, touring shows and online platforms has also created more opportunities for new performers to reach audiences.

Kabarett and German Satire

One of the most distinctive parts of German comedy is Kabarett, a form of performance traditionally associated with political and social satire.

Kabarett performers often use humour, irony and commentary to examine current affairs, society and everyday life. Although Kabarett has its own traditions and style, modern German comedy includes many performers who move between different formats, combining elements of cabaret, stand-up and theatrical performance.

This long-standing tradition gives German comedy a particularly broad range, from light entertainment and observational humour to more satirical performances.

German Comedians on Television and Film

Television has played a major role in making German comedians familiar to large audiences. Comedy series, sketch programmes, panel shows, late-night formats and entertainment programmes have provided platforms for performers from different backgrounds.

German comedians and comedy actors are also active in cinema, theatre and voice acting. Some performers have built careers primarily through television, while others began with live comedy before moving into acting, writing or presenting.

Germany's entertainment industry also includes performers from different regions and cultural backgrounds, contributing to the variety of voices found within contemporary German comedy.

Comedy in German and Beyond

German is the main language of the country's comedy scene, but German-language comedy also reaches audiences in Austria, Switzerland and other parts of the German-speaking world.

At the same time, digital platforms have made it easier for German comedians to reach international audiences. YouTube, podcasts, social media and streaming services allow performers to publish sketches, stand-up clips, interviews and other comedy content without relying solely on traditional television or live venues.

This changing media landscape has helped introduce a new generation of German comedians to wider audiences.
