He initially studied journalism at Tartu University and was previously a member of the Comedy Estonia comedy troupe. Currently, he is a member of the Huumoriklubi (Humor Club), and is considered one of the most well-known and watched Estonian stand-up comedians. Stewart Johnson, comedian from Estonia

Estonia

Stewart Johnson

Stewart Johnson is an Estonian stand-up comedian with USA origins, born in Wisconsin, USA in 1975. He identifies as an American citizen and has lived in Estonia for 28 years. Originally from Wisconsin, he felt he had 'already seen' America by the time he was 20 and sought to explore other parts of the world. In 1991, he recalls Estonia’s declaration of independence and subsequently developed a friendship with an Estonian while attending a summer camp in the United States. After traveling to Europe to study in 1996, he visited Estonia in 1997 following an invitation from that friend. Friends cautioned him about potential dangers in Estonia during the 1990s and 2000s. Johnson’s journey to Estonia was gradual. During 1998, he made a short return to the US to complete his education, initially aiming for a career in the Foreign Service; however, he relocated back to Estonia permanently that same year, traveling with only two suitcases and a book bag. Initially residing in Tartu, Estonia’s second largest city, he learned Estonian by watching American TV shows with subtitles. He performs stand-up comedy and enjoys recounting bizarre events from his life to audiences, often employing a dry wit. Audiences enjoy listening to and laughing at his stories. He is a storyteller and resident of Estonia, performing at stand-up comedy events organized by Comedy Estonia and participating in Estonian stand-up comedy tours. He co-founded the Comedy Estonia troupe in 2010 and occasionally performs private comedy shows. Stewart Johnson has held various jobs including cashier, teacher, counselor, editor, and funk saxophonist, and briefly worked as a video shop clerk in the American Deep South where he mischievously switched labels on adult films. He studied nuclear politics in university. His experiences, including his healthcare treatment for testicular cancer diagnosed a few years ago, inspired the film “The Chuck Band Show,” loosely based on his story. Remarkably, the total cost for three months of medical care, including 15 or 16 days of hospital-based chemotherapy, amounted to only 5 euros. Following his marriage to an Estonian woman, he purchased a vintage log house in Nursipalu in 2003 and has since dedicated up to nine months annually to residing there, originally with the intention of retirement. However, in 2022, the government decided to expand a military training area and expropriate his home, leading him to join the Facebook group “Defend Nursipalu.” He speaks Estonian and has expressed frustration with pro-Kremlin posts within that group, believing the government’s handling of the expansion was poorly handled. Representatives from the Ministry of Defense assessed his land and house in February 2024. He is against Russia and identifies as an independent thinker, not a Republican or Democrat.
