Sten-Åke Cederhök
Biography
Sten-Åke Cederhök, born Carlsson on January 30, 1913, in Båraryds parish, Jönköping County, was considered one of Sweden’s most beloved folk entertainers of the 20th century. He spent his early childhood in Gothenburg, describing himself as “3 kg Småland and 100 kg Gothenburg,” after moving there just a few months after birth. Cederhök began his career in 1929 at Alingsås Folkets Park, performing in a folk comedy titled 'When Smes-Erik and Pigg-Jan visited America'. He initially gained recognition around Gothenburg, establishing himself as an actor, comedian, and singer known for his distinctive Gothenburg dialect.
Throughout his career, Cederhök balanced entertainment work with regular employment. Prior to becoming a performer, he worked at SKF's metalworking plant for seven years, and later held positions as an assistant and inspector at the Employment Agency until 1970. He frequently collaborated with Sonya Hedenbratt and ran Hagateatern near Järntorget in Gothenburg during the 1940s. From 1958 to 1982, he operated Veckans Revy at Liseberg, a significant venue for his work. Cederhök wrote and acted in popular revues throughout much of his career, often staging them at the local dance hall in Fritsla after settling there in 1935.
Television brought Cederhök wider fame starting in 1963, with appearances in series like 'Blå gatan' (1966) and 'Jubel i busken' (1968). He is perhaps best known for his role in the long-running television show Albert & Herbert from 1974 to 1979, alongside Tomas von Brömssen, including a Christmas special in 1982. Other notable roles included playing Sitting Bull in the musical 'Annie Get Your Gun' in 1974 and touring with the folk comedy 'Baldevins Bröllop' in 1979. Cederhök made his final public appearance on August 20, 1989, at Liseberg before an audience of 18,000 people. He died on January 14, 1990, leaving behind a legacy as a devoted supporter of the GAIS football club and author of songs such as 'En Gårdapojk'.
