Biography

Born Innocent, he was baptized Jean-Paul in Belgium and later adopted by a couple of women, being raised in La Hulpe, Brabant Wallon. His grandparents hail from the 19th century, and his mothers were born in the 1920s, a backdrop that informs much of his work. From a young age, Jean Paul felt drawn to the arts; during his adolescence, he took theater classes and gained experience at Radio Corsaire.

Jean Paul’s career began with studies in information and communication in Lille, followed by acting training at Cours Florent in Paris in 1989. He subsequently pursued an acting career, earning his first role in a telefilm after being noticed by director Pierre Joassin. He then joined the cast of 'Julie Lescault' for six years as Brigadier Léveil. Alongside colleagues from Cours Florent—Pierre-François Martin-Laval, Marina Foïs, Maurice Barthélemy, Pascal Vincent, and Elise Larnicol—he formed Les Robins des Bois, producing shows such as ‘Robins des bois, d’à peu près Alexandre Dumas,’ which gained recognition from Dominique Farrugia. The group appeared on television programs like 'La Grosse Emission' and 'Nulle part ailleurs' before shifting their focus to film in 2001.

Jean Paul has enjoyed a prolific career in both comedy and film. He achieved wider recognition through his role in 'Karnaval' (1998) and later won the César Award for Best Supporting Actor in 2003 for 'Monsieur Batignole.' His work spans numerous films, including 'Podium,' 'RRRrrrr!!!', 'Je préfère qu’on reste amis…', 'La Môme,' 'Les Tuche,' and collaborations with Luc Besson on projects like ‘Les Aventures extraordinaires d’Adèle Blanc-Sec,’ ‘Poupoupidou,’ and ‘Low Cost.’ He also directed his first film, 'Sans arme, ni haine, ni violence,' in 2007, playing the lead role. At 43 years old, Jean Paul is entering a more introspective phase in his career, drawing humor from the contrast between the present day and stories of his childhood. He will perform his new show in Durbuy, Belgium, from August 21-24, 2026, as part of the "C’est du Belge" terrestrial cruise alongside Anne Gruwez, Eric Boschman, Freddy Tougaux, and Isabelle Hauben.
