Biography

Susan Elizabeth Perkins, known professionally as Sue Perkins, was born in England on September 22, 1969; she is a comedian, broadcaster, presenter, actress, and writer. Raised in Croydon, London, Sue Perkins had two younger brothers, David Perkins, and received her education at Croham Hurst School, a private girls' school located close to her family home. Her father worked for a car dealership and her mother was a secretary.

Perkins’s path to comedy began at the University of Cambridge, where she studied English at New Hall (now Murray Edwards College), graduating in 1991. During her time at Croham Hurst School, Perkins participated in performing arts and held the position of president of the Cambridge Footlights drama group for the 1990-91 academic year. It was also at Cambridge that she met Mel Giedroyc, and they formed the comedy duo 'Mel and Sue' in 1997. The Cambridge Footlights started performing in the 1990s, and their performances included appearances on television programs such as French & Saunders. The pair hosted Channel 4’s Light Lunch and its evening version, Late Lunch , from 1997 to 1999. Their quick-fire and self-depreciating comedy style quickly gained popularity.

Perkins and Giedroyc co-presented The Great British Bake Off from 2010 to 2016, becoming widely recognized as 'Bake-Off Sue'. She also co-presented the historical food series Supersizers with Giles Coren from 2007 to 2011. Throughout her career, Perkins has appeared on numerous comedy panel shows such as QI , Have I Got News for You , and The Last Leg . In 2008, she won the BBC programme Maestro and conducted the BBC Concert Orchestra at the Proms. She currently hosts BBC Radio 4’s Just a Minute since 2021. She has also presented travel documentaries, including 'Japan with Sue Perkins' and 'The Ganges with Sue Perkins', and has written books like Spectacles and East of Croydon . She was in a relationship with Anna Richardson from 2014 to 2021, and has spoken about living with a benign pituitary tumour.
