Bruno Arena
Biography
Bruno Arena, born January 12, 1957, in Milan, was an Italian comedian, cabaret performer, and actor. His father had Sicilian origins. After graduating from an art high school and studying physical education at ISEF, he worked as a physical education teacher in schools within the Varese province. Arena initially pursued a career as a tourist animator, beginning in 1983. A serious car accident in 1984 resulted in partial vision loss in one eye, an experience he later incorporated into his comedic performances.
Arena’s career took a significant turn in 1988 when he met Max Cavallari and together they formed the comedy duo Fichi d'India. The name, meaning "Prickly Pear," was inspired by plants they saw during a walk in Palinuro. They debuted at the Fuori Pasto cabaret club in Varese in 1989 and quickly gained popularity performing on beaches in Palinuro. Fichi d'India frequently incorporated surrealism into their performances, and they gained recognition for parodies of teleshopping broadcasts, especially those featuring Sergio Baracco, often using the phrase “Amici hararara.” The pair made appearances on radio programs such as Radio Deejay and R101, and were featured on television networks including Italia 1, Canale 5, and Italia 7. They also performed theatrical shows and tours, and were chosen by Roberto Benigni to play the Cat and the Fox in the film Pinocchio, receiving critical praise for their comedic and acting contributions.
Arena and Cavallari owned the Arlecchino club in Vedano Olona, which helped launch the careers of many cabaret artists from Milan and Varese. Their television appearances expanded to include shows like Yogurt - Fermenti attivi (1994) and La sai l'ultima?, and they were featured in several editions of Zelig and the Merry Christmas film series (2001-2003). In 2013, Arena suffered a brain hemorrhage during the recording of Zelig, leading to aphasia and an inability to walk. He co-authored a book titled Domani ti porto al mare. Niente può cancellare il nostro amore magnifico with Rosanna Marrone. Bruno Arena passed away on September 27, 2022, in Barasso, at the age of 65, and is remembered as a prominent figure in comedy within the Varese province.
